Three people died as a result of a hantavirus outbreak in Spain. This was reported by the country's Ministry of Health. All cases were registered in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. The infection was caused by Puumala virus, transmitted by mice.

The first patient died in Salamanca hospital at the end of last month. The second and third fatal cases were registered last week. All the deceased were rural residents working near farms and warehouses.

Investigation of Causes

Local health authorities are conducting an epidemiological investigation. Specialists are establishing the source of infection and tracking contacts of the deceased. According to preliminary data, infection could have occurred by inhaling dust particles contaminated with rodent secretions.

The Ministry of Health issued recommendations for residents of the region. Citizens are advised to take precautions when working near mouse habitats, use protective masks and gloves.
