After the MV Hondius cruise ship news, Russians are asking the same question. Is hantavirus here or not?

Short answer: yes, hantavirus exists in Russia. But it is not the strain that broke out on the cruise. And there is no need to panic.

Which hantaviruses live in Russia

Russia has Old World strains. That means they cause the renal form of the disease, not the pulmonary form. And crucially — they do not spread between people.

The main strain in European Russia is Puumala. It is carried by the bank vole. The Far East records the Hantaan strain, carried by field mice. Port cities occasionally see the Seoul strain, linked to brown rats.

Outbreak map of hantavirus in Russia

The most active natural outbreak zones are in the Volga and Ural regions. Here are the leading regions by case numbers:

RegionCases per yearMain strain
Bashkortostan1500-2500Puumala
Tatarstan800-1200Puumala
Udmurtia500-1000Puumala
Mari El300-600Puumala
Primorsky Krai50-150Hantaan

In Moscow and the surrounding region, HFRS cases are isolated. The main risk zone is rural parts of the listed regions.

Will the Andes cruise strain reach Russia

The risk of the Andes strain being imported into Russia is assessed as very low. There are almost no direct flights from Argentina or Chile to Russia. The MV Hondius route did not touch Russian ports.

In theory, import is possible through a passenger on an international flight with a connection. But even in that case the risk of spread is minimal — the virus requires close and prolonged contact for transmission.

Rospotrebnadzor reported strengthening sanitary control at airports. However, as of May 15, 2026, no cases of the Andes strain have been registered in Russia.

Risk groups in Russia

  • Residents of endemic regions (Volga, Urals, Far East)
  • Dacha owners and gardeners
  • Agricultural workers
  • Tourists and hunters in forest zones
  • Warehouse and grain storage workers

How to protect yourself

  1. Do not touch rodents or their nests
  2. Ventilate dacha houses before moving in (at least 30 minutes)
  3. Do wet cleaning with disinfectants
  4. Store food in sealed containers
  5. Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning basements and storage areas
  6. If symptoms appear after rodent contact, seek medical attention immediately

Russian hantaviruses are a known medical problem. They do not spread between people and, with timely treatment, rarely lead to death. The Andes strain is not in the country. No need to panic — just follow simple hygiene measures.
