Another death

The Colorado Department of Public Health confirmed: a state resident died from hantavirus. The diagnosis — hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).

This case is not part of the MV Hondius outbreak. It has nothing to do with the cruise ship.

Where the danger hides

The infection happened in a rural area. Contact with rodents — the classic story for hantavirus in the US.

Sin Nombre virus is endemic to western states. It spreads through droppings and urine of infected mice. Just inhaling dust can put you at risk.

Every year, 20–40 HPS cases are reported in the US. 95% occur west of the Mississippi.
