Coming home

18 Americans returned from the MV Hondius to the US. They were immediately placed in a quarantine facility in Nebraska. Until May 31 — exactly 21 days of monitoring.

CDC issued official orders for two passengers. The acting CDC director signed them. The legal basis is the Public Health Service Act.

The virus spreads

While passengers were returning home, hantavirus found new victims. Three additional cases were confirmed in France, Spain, and Canada.

All of them contracted the virus before the outbreak was detected.

The situation in the US

As of May 18, no confirmed Andes virus cases have been reported in the United States. The risk to Americans is considered extremely low.

But monitoring continues. Too many unknowns remain.
