Border locked

Canada did not wait. On May 12, 2026, the government announced: passengers and crew of the MV Hondius are banned from boarding flights to Canada.

The measure is temporary. But strict. A joint effort by the Public Health Agency of Canada and Transport Canada. No compromises.

How many people are monitored

Initially, 10 high-risk contacts were reported. After reassessment β€” 9. One person from Quebec was removed from the list.

All remain asymptomatic. Local health authorities monitor each one. Daily checks.

Why such measures

Andes virus is the only hantavirus with human-to-human transmission. Rare, but possible. Canada decided not to take risks.

The country had experience with SARS and COVID-19. Lesson learned: better close the border early than deal with the consequences.

What was done

Transport Canada introduced temporary measures. Airlines received instructions. MV Hondius passengers cannot board without permission.

The Public Health Agency coordinates with provinces. A unified protocol. Clear rules.

'The risk to the Canadian population remains low. We continue to monitor the situation.' β€” Public Health Agency of Canada, May 12, 2026

Result

As of the outbreak closure β€” zero cases in Canada. The measures worked. The border held.

But the question remains. How long can Canada keep borders closed? The next outbreak may come faster.
