The season in numbers

Argentina is going through a severe hantavirus season. 118 confirmed cases. 38 deaths.

Neuquén province remains the epicenter. Most infections are registered there. The fatality rate is about 32%. This is typical for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Americas.

The trend

Weekly growth has slowed. The first sign that the seasonal peak may be behind us.

Epidemiologists expect a gradual decline in June. But the virus will not disappear. It stays in nature — in rodent populations.

Here is what matters: hantavirus is not just about a cruise ship outbreak. In South America, it kills every year. The only protection is avoiding contact with rodents.
