Six cases of hantavirus are now confirmed. That's out of eight suspected cases. This comes from an outbreak on the cruise ship MV "Hondius." This is according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
One question still remains. Another person has tested positive for hantavirus on the MV "Hondius." The ship is heading toward Tenerife. The number of confirmed cases has increased.
Only one more person was added since WHO's last update on Thursday. The risk to the general public is still low. WHO assessed the global risk as low.
They are still watching the situation closely. They will update their risk assessment as needed. Three people among the confirmed and suspected cases have died.
This includes a Dutch couple. A man and a woman died on April 11 and April 26. A German woman also died on May 2.
All six confirmed cases are infected with the Andes virus, a specific strain of hantavirus, according to lab tests reported by WHO.
